A password-protected directory or area is a folder which can be accessed when a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized individuals can check out its content. This option can be used for the main folder of a specific Internet site or only for a particular subfolder based on the needs you have. As an example, when you are developing a new website and you do not want people to see it before it's ready, you may want to restrict the access to it as a whole, and if you need only some individuals to be able to access certain files, you may password-protect only a particular folder, while the rest of the Internet site can be seen by everyone. Regardless, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear in case the login details the visitor types in are not accurate. Even a direct link to a file won't work provided any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Hosting

Creating a password-protected area will take no more than a few clicks and a few seconds if you host your websites in a hosting account with us. You won't need to do anything difficult - you will need to choose a domain/subdomain, to pick which folder under it should be secured, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. In case a number of people require their own login credentials, there will not be a problem to make a variety of different usernames with access to the exact same folder. All secured folders shall appear with a padlock icon in the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this function is activated. If you want to turn off the protection feature for any folder, you can disable it from the same exact section of the CP in which you have enabled it.

It will require several mouse clicks to enable the password protection feature for any folder that you have, in case you use one of our semi-dedicated plans. It is included in the Hepsia CP, that you will get to manage your new account and once you log in and visit the Password Protection section, you will be able to choose the domain or subdomain which needs to be protected and then the specific folder - either the primary folder or any subfolder under it. You shall also see two boxes where you shall have to type the login name and the password which will be required to access the folder in question and you'll be ready. By following precisely the same steps, you are able to set up a variety of login credentials for the same folder to give several individuals their own username/password. All protected folders shall feature a small padlock sign in the File Manager section.
